Skin Rejuvenation Treatments

Product Review: Lumity Life

I was introduced to Lumity Life while attending an aesthetic medical meeting.  I love trying new anti-aging products and was given a 3 month supply.  Lumity recommends that you try the product for 3 months to feel and see the benefits.

Sara Palmer Hussey, Phd is the creator of  Lumity.  “Lumity’s approach is unique in that we are the only supplement to counter all 9 causes of aging from within.”  Oxidative Damage, Cellular Debris, Glycation, Telomere Shortening, DNA Damage, Inflammation, Cellular Energy Decline, Insulin Resistance and Hormonal Decline.

According to Dr. Hussey, Lumity is the first supplement that addresses all 9 causes of aging.  Zoe Diana Draelos, MD, a practicing board-certified dermatologist, conducted an independent double-blind  clinical trial. The trial results indicated that while taking Lumity  for 90 days patients felt improvement in their overall wellness. There are many existing  articles and clinical data  on the vitamins, minerals and amino acids in the product. Lumity is manufactured in California.

My first thought upon seeing the product was that the packaging was pretty, the product contained many important vitamins/minerals and the concept intriguing. There are two bottles, one labeled for the morning and one for the evening.  The morning soft-gels are mocha-colored and contain a mix of Vitamins A, E, D and C, selenium, turmeric root extract, iodine, magnesium, zinc, flaxseed oil and Lumity Vita Complex for skin rejuvenation, anti-aging and increased energy. The vanilla-colored soft gels contain a mix of amino acids, flaxseed oil, and the Lumity Renew Complex, for better sleep and cell renewal.  Lumity’s Renew and Vita Complexes contain anti-inflammatory, anti-bacteria and cell regenerating properties plus anti-oxidants, and amino acids.

The morning formula helps to defend against environmental and lifestyle aggressors, support energy production and reduce inflammation.  The night formula promotes repair and recovery, replenishes vital antioxidants and nutrients and supports the clearing of cellular debris. It also helps stimulate the release of HGH.
I’m not very disciplined about taking vitamins so I was not sure that I could commit to taking 3 soft gels in the morning and 3 in the evening.  I’m also a big skeptic when it comes to “manufacturer claims”. As there is so much hype in this crowded anti-aging market. Many claims made by anti-aging products either lack the scientific data or are in a grey zone of efficacy. The FDA does not regulate supplements.

Since I was not taking any multi-vitamins at the time and feeling a little blah.. I decided  this was a perfect time to try Lumity.

To remind myself to take the capsules, I put the AM bottle near my morning coffee and the PM bottle next to my dog’s evening medicine. This worked and eventually became a habit.

Product Review: Avant Charcoal Age Defying Masque

Several months back. I was contacted by the Founder and Owner of Avant Skin Care, Jeanne Oberstar, to see if I would be interested in trying their Charcoal Exfloiating Age Defying Masque, in exchange for a review.  As I’m always trying new beauty products and Charcoal Masks are very popular, I agreed.

The packaging is clean and simple. It comes with a Thank you card and instructions. I was very happy to learn that this mask does not harden like many charcoal masks on the market that have been reported to rip off your skin.

All Avant products are made in Florida, USA which is a huge plus.

I contacted Jeanne to learn more about the mask and her company before I agreed to try it.

Jeanne told me that her inspiration for starting Avant Goods came from dealing with many side effects of thyroid disease.  She wanted to create a line of skin care products that were non-toxic, non-endrocine disrupting, and healing.

To differentiate Avant’s Charcoal Masque from other facial skin care masks on the market, Jeanne told me that it has contains botanical oils that heal and hydrate. The mask  detoxifies, exfoliates and is a crème consistency that does not harden like some of the other charcoal skin care masks on the market. The list of ingredients are quite extensive and are sourced from around the world. However, according to Jeanne if any of the ingredients are  readily available in the US they will try to source them domestically.  Avant’s main ingredients in their mask is Kaolin Clay and Bamboo Charcoal. The white  Kaolin Clay  base has many healing properties, including purifying and detoxifying the skin. Kaolin Clay has many potent antioxidants. It helps clearing up breakouts, exfoliates dead skin cells and soothes irritated skin.

The Bamboo Charcoal, known as the “Black Diamond” in Asia, contains 300 types of micro-organic minerals that draw out toxins to clear pores allowing them to breathe. Avant’s sources the Bamboo from South Korea.

The Avant Masque contains:

(98.5% Naturally Derived / 70% Organic) Ingredients: Deionized Aqua (Water), Organic Barbadensis Leaf Juice (Aloe), Organic Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower Oil), Glyceryl Stearate, Kosher Vegetable Glycerin, Octyl Palmitate, Organic Cocos Nucifera (Coconut Oil), Kaolin, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa Butter), Cetyl Alcohol, Potassium Stearate, Organic Beeswax, Pumice, Charcoal Powder (Bamboo Charcoal Powder), Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vitamin C), Sodium Magnesium Silicate, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Cellulose Gum, Purified Smectite Clay, Citrus Limon (Lemon Essential Oil), Eucalyptus Globulous (Eucalyptus Essential Oil), Organic Syzysium Aromaticum (Clove), Eugenia Caryophyllata (Clove Essential Oil-active, nosmell), Organic Juniperus Communis (Juniper), Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel), Organic Capsicum Annuum var. Aannuum (Cayenne), Organic Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba Oil), Calophyllum Tacamahaca (Tamanu Oil), Spirulina Maxima (Spirulina), Macrocystis Pyrifera (Kelp), Organic Borago Officinalis (Borage Oil), Organic Linum Usitatissimum (Flax Seed Oil), Organic Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose Oil), Organic Rosa Canina (Rose Hip Oil), Panthenol (Vitamin B5), Organic Arnica Montana (Arnica), Organic Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender), Organic Calendula Officinalis (Calendula), Organic Anthemis Nobilis (Chamomile), Grapeseed Oil, Macadamia Integrifolia (Macadamia Nut Oil), Sodium Carbomer, Phenoxyethanol, Ethyl Hexyl Glycerin, Organic Centella Asiatica (Gotu Kola Extract), Organic Equisetum Arvense (Horsetail Plant Extract), Organic Pelagonium Gravoleons (Geranium Extract), Organic Taraxacum Officinalis (Dandelion Extract).

I’ve been using the Avant Charcoal Masque several times a month. Upon opening the jar, the mask looks grey and very creamy. I like to have a home spa day on the weekends and use the mask as one of  my skin care routines. I used a mask brush and coated my skin avoiding the area directly under my eyes. It was easy and fun to apply. The instructions say to rub it into the skin. But, I prefered to apply it with a brush first. I will try it next time on my neck and chest.  I’d actually love to coat my entire body, but I’d use up the jar and it would make a mess in my bathroom. The instructions say to keep it on for 10-20 minutes, I kept it on for 40 minutes with no adverse reactions.  It washed off easily, but since it the mask is dark grey I made sure I rinsed it all off using a dark-colored wash cloth to gently remove it. My skin felt soft and had a nice pink glow afterwards.

I have not had any break-outs or irritation from the product and my skin tends to be sensitive to new skin care products. The price point is good at $27.99 for a 4 oz jar. The jar should last quite some time, if covered tightly and kept away from moisture.  As with any skin care products, it should be discarded after 2 years.  Please check with your plastic surgeon or dermatologist if you plan on using this product after any cosmetic procedures.

Given the quality, ingredients and price point, it’s a good buy.  I’d give it a try!!

The Differences and Similarities Between Laser Treatments and IPL

If you are interested in exploring clinical treatments to reverse wrinkles, sags, and other skin problems, you have probably heard of both IPL and Laser treatments, but you might be thinking that they are the same thing. That isn’t the case at all. It’s important to understand the differences between the two before you decide whether either one is a treatment that you should try.

The Fundamental Similarities Between the Two

There are a few fundamental similarities between the two types of treatments. One is that they both produce a form of light during treatment. However, the term “laser” stands for “light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation,” which is not the same thing as IPL treatment. IPL uses a non-laser light source.

Another similarity between the two is that versions of the devices are made for at home use and other, stronger versions of them are produced for clinical use. That means that you have the option of using either one to treat yourself at home or going to a clinic to have a professional technician perform the treatment. But you have to understand that you won’t get quick or consistent results at home that are the same as those you would get in a clinic.

Another good example of how they are similar is in the types of conditions they can treat. Both are commonly used for laser hair removal, but they can also be used to treat a wide variety of other issues associated with aging, including wrinkles and sagging skin.

The Major Difference Between the Two

The major difference between the two types of treatments is that IPL is a mild treatment that is usually used on a larger area of skin at a time. On the other hand, most laser devices are precise machines that penetrate the skin with pinpoint accuracy for very specific results. Laser devices also produce a greater degree of results, in general, because they generate more heat than IPL machines. Granted, there are exceptions on both sides. For example, laser skin resurfacing is generally done on a large area of skin.

My Beauty Picks for 2014

Anti-aging Being in the beauty industry affords me the opportunity to try many products. I travel and lecture at industry meetings and medical conferences which have exhibits halls featuring the best industry leaders in aesthetics.  I usually come home with more products than I can possibly use. Companies also send me products to evaluate, hoping I’ll blog about their greatness.  I look for products that have science to back them up.  I don’t believe in hype or products promising that you will look 10 years younger  in 6 weeks.  I also don’t buy mass market skincare products sold in department stores.  I am loyal to the products that keep my skin looking great.

My skincare routine is fairly simple: RX Tazorac PM, Exfoliate with a AHA cleanser, apply Vitamin C serum, eye cream and sunblock in the AM.  My challenging areas have always been my eye area, neck and décolleté .

In 2014, I had the privilege of interviewing derma diva on NipTuck Talk Jan Marini, founder of Jan Marini Skin Research. Jan shared some of her skincare secrets with me and  taught me about product chemistry during our interview and post-interview phone calls. You can listen to our interview on NipTuck Talk.

I stopped using Tazorac and adopted Jan Marini Skincare Management system, plus Jan Marini Clean Zyme Face Cleasner and mask.  I’m thrilled with the results. My skin is never irritated or peely anymore (except when I get a chemical peel or laser treatment).

Here is my 2014 list of favorite beauty products:

Makeup

Colorscience Mineral Corrector Palette: Great for covering up imperfections and bruising from fillers Botox, or surgery.

Benefit Real Eye Makeup Remover: I just discovered this great eye makeup remover!!

Jill Kirsch Color– Ultimate Make Up Kit: All in one make-up kit customized for your color palette.  I take this kit with me everywhere, even in my gym bag. Love it!

Skincare

Jan Marini Skincare Management System: My #1 life saving anti-aging skin care solution for 2014.  It’s an easy Anti-aging System with clinically proven results.

Jan Marini Retinol Plus MD: I switched from Tazorac to non RX retinol. No dryness or peeling.

The neck is a hard area to treat. I’ve tried a couple of neck skincare products and found them not to live up to their claims.  Marini Juveneck debuted in 2014.  A revolutionary anti-aging cream specifically formulated for the delicate neck area. Clinically proven to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and creases, refine skin texture and increase hydration. I’ve used Juveneck for 3 months applying it 2x a day.  I’m very pleased with the results and can see a softening of my horizontal band lines. Juveneck is a keeper. Stay tuned for some before and after photos.

Eye Cream: After trying many eye creams  IS Clinical Youth Eye Complex from Innovative Skin Care is the winner.

Sun Block: EltaMD tinted. I don’t leave home without it.  I use it as a foundation, before applying any make-up.

Body:  My Body is the new kid on the block. I love their Firm and Tone Body Lotion and Skin Prep Body Polish.

Post-Treatment Products

Jan Marini Bio Shield is an amazing post laser product. There is nothing on the market that compares to Bio Shield. I used for a series of laser treatments.  It’s pricey at $130.00, however worth every dollar.

My Body has a  post- treatment kit, Calm-It Down and a  Professional Pro-Biotic treatment that can be applied pre-and post peel, featuring topical probiotics bioactives.

Staying beautiful in 2015..
